Lecture Series Translational Bioinformatics & Systems Biomedicine - "Systems analysis of cancer metabolism for identification of cancer drug targets and biomarkers" - Prof Jens Nielsen

14/03/2018 16:00 to 14/03/2018 18:30 (Europe/Luxembourg)

Prof Jens NIELSEN is Director of Department of Biology and Biological Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, Chief Science Officer, Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, Denmark

With increasing health care costs and inefficiency in many treatment strategies, the health care system is bound to transform in the coming years. A key driver for this change is the generation of big data, development of detailed mathematical models and an increased participation of patients in their own health.

The use of mathematical models to study biological systems, i.e. analyze large datasets and simulate system behavior, is referred to as systems biology, or when applied to study medicine, systems medicine.

This approach enables integrative analysis of different types of data, including different data types, and can hereby provide new insight into complex biological systems that cannot be obtained by any other mean. Here I will discuss the challenges of using systems medicine for advancing the development of personalized and precision medicine, and it will be illustrated how the concept of genome-scale metabolic models can be used for integrative analysis of big data with the objective of identifying novel biomarkers that are foundational for personalized and precision medicine.

programme 2017-2018

The LIH lecture and workshops series in Translational Bioinformatics and Systems Biomedicine, supported by the FNR and jointly organized with the University of Luxembourg, are gathering internationally recognised speakers to address topics around Translational Bioinformatics and Systems Biomedicine.  Please find here  the full programme for 2017-2018.

This lecture will be followed by a workshop especially dedicated to early-stage researchers.

Attendance to the lecture and workshop are free of charge. Should you be interested in registering for the workshop, please feel free to do so by sending us an email.
